Intel will launch at least two other reference designs following the launch of two chipsets in the second half of 2012 with the first products launched in 2013.
The system on chips, named the Z2000 and the Z2580, will replace the Z2460, and ill be accompanied by at least two reference smartphones to be launched by 2014, at least two years from now.
Intel has already announced partnerships with ZTE, Motorola and Lenovo to manufacturer smartphones with the reference designs using the same purpose of Qualcomm’s own Mobile Development Platform.
Matt Warman of Telegraph says that Mike Bell, Intel’s vice president of Ultra Mobility, has confirmed that these reference designs will be used to “test and demonstrate” capabilities of the new chip.
Orange will be the first mobile phone operator to market an Intel-based smartphone based on the Z2460, the Santa Clara – Santa Clara being where Intel is based in California.
Of the top 10 mobile phone makers, only two have confirmed that they will use Intel’s Medfield-based chips.
Bell also says that Android 5.0 Jelly Bean, the follow up to Ice Cream Sandwich, is likely to be the point of intersection, one where software and hardware line up.
