Intel has added Chinese manufacturer ZTE to its list of strategic partners set to sell Atom based smartphones.

ZTE’s EVP, He Shiyou, said that the alliance would allow ZTE to “move faster” and “create unique and differentiated products for wireless operators” and said that the first Intel-powered mobile with the ZTE brand would come in the second half of the year.

Google-owned Motorola Mobility and Lenovo have already confirmed that they will build smartphones based on Intel’s Medfield solution with the Atom Z2460 being the first SoC used.

Although unconfirmed, it is likely that ZTE has been producing the Orange Santa Clara and the new Lava International XOLO X900 which was also announced at the press event, given ZTE’s closeness with Orange and their long-ranging partnership.

In addition, both handsets share similar features including almost identical fascias and specifications.

It’s worth noting that Android will be powering these smartphones and Intel has been extremely proactive in its support for the Google-owned mobile platform.
